Basic Function

The Renewable Fuels & Feedstocks Market Analyst will provide fundamental commodity market analysis for renewable fuels such as ethanol, biodiesel and renewable diesel (HVO); as well as renewable feedstocks including vegetable oils and their base crops such as soybean oil, soybeans, , rapeseed oil, rapeseed etc. Other feedstocks market analysis will include tallow and other animal fats, greases and used cooking oil. In addition, fundamental analysis of UK and European credit markets and regulatory programs, in particular the UK RTFO, will be a component of the job. This position will support global trading and business development of renewables, feedstocks and agriculture markets as well as providing bench support to the European renewables trading team. A key component will be consolidating business strategy and plans into concise, coherent means of communication. In addition, this position will interact with Value Chain Supply & Optimization, Emerging Energy, Refining, Marketing, Regulatory & Compliance, Risk, F&PA, the Chief Economists Office, Investor Relations, Commercial Senior Management and Executive Management.

Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities
  • Developing a comprehensive understanding of commodity trading, including key supply/demand regions, logistics assets, storage facilities, regulatory frameworks and financial instruments used in these markets.
  • An understanding of key trading and development strategies is crucial for success.
  • Communicating market fundamentals, trading strategies and other renewables information to trading and Commercial leadership.
  • Assisting in the evolution of a market plan that defines a profitable business model for new commodities in line with Commercial's overall trading strategy.
  • Understanding key trading positions of commodity trading to ensure all aspects of a trading position are understood.
  • Development and maintenance of supply and demand models, in particular for RTFCs. This will involve working closely with trading to understand the market and trends, incorporate downtime, seasonal cycles, macroeconomic variables and utilize import/export data to ensure the models are accurate and accepted by trading.
  • Identify market anomalies and communicate to trading on what physical market and forward market changes might occur.
  • Work with the UK Low Carbon Team on business development opportunities in the renewables space, providing both analytical and economic modelling support.
  • Provide position keeping support to the European renewables desk to assist with exposure management and deal entry.
  • Work with the European renewable traders and regulatory group to ensure the smooth onboarding of new feedstock suppliers.
  • Work with third party consultants and brokers to understand and evaluate their views on renewables markets and factor those into development and trading approaches
  • Communicating external business intelligence and study results to assist traders and originators with successful implementation of tactics.
  • Understanding and communicating geopolitical and regulatory events/factors which impact price movements.
  • Leading information gathering process and development of presentation packages as needed.
  • Sharing knowledge freely and improving peer group understanding of own niche markets.
  • Leading ad-hoc projects and analysis around market fundamentals (including infrastructure changes) to support trade ideas.

Critical Skills/Leadership Criteria

Required:
  • Hold the legal right to live and work in the UK on a permanent basis without restrictions, or meet the relevant criteria for employer sponsorship under the UK points-based immigration system
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as engineering, finance, economics, or agriculture related
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Relevant experience in the energy, agriculture, or renewable fuels industries
  • Relevant experience related to commodity markets
  • High degree of collaborative skills with the ability to develop, lead and actively participate on cross functional teams
  • High degree of initiative with the ability to proactively anticipate needs
  • Excellent written and oral communication, inter-personal and presentation skills
  • Ability to manage conflict, influence others and facilitate resolution
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to evolving requirements
  • Capable of gaining consensus and trust across multiple functional areas to build a common vision and direction
  • Ability to synthesize data into useful information and clearly articulate it
  • Proactive in problem identification and resolution, providing creative solutions to complex issues

Preferred:
  • Relevant experience in a trading environment and/or with market analysis
  • Experience with business development projects
  • Familiarity with environmental regulatory programmes
  • Knowledge of Commercial trading businesses and global commodity trading
  • Refining/petrochemical knowledge
  • Proficiency with statistical modeling software, database software, and economic modeling
  • Ability to code in Visual Basic and proficiency in SQL, Tableau, Python, and/or R preferred

Phillips 66 has significant marketing operations in Europe. In the UK the business is primarily wholesale, selling fuels to distributors (some of whom are branded JET) and resellers. The fuels are either collected by customers or delivered through a contracted road tanker fleet operating out of a number of UK distribution points. In addition, Phillips 66 Limited supplies a network of approximately 330 independently owned petrol forecourts, all of which are branded JET.

Other markets served are aviation, marine and LPG. JET supplies some of the UK's growing secondary airports using owned and shared refuelling tankers and storage, and delivers to airlines through contracted refuelling operations. Marine markets are served using contracted vehicles, as is the LPG business.
